Dr Eugenie Macfarlane is a postdoctoral scientist and lecturer at the ANZAC Research Institute, The University of Sydney. Her research focuses on the role of endogenous glucocorticoids in the development of skeletal diseases including osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Dr Macfarlane completed her PhD in 2023 at the University of Sydney under the supervision of Prof Markus Seibel and Prof Hong Zhou, where she found that chronic light disruption induces cartilage damage and bone loss via the desynchronization of glucocorticoid secretion. In 2024, she was awarded a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Ideas grant (as Chief Investigator B) which expands on this research and aims to establish how glucocorticoid treatment could be used to improve rhythmic skeletal gene expression and prevent the development of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis during shift work. In 2025-2026, she completed fellowship training in skeletal stem cell biology at Weill Cornell Medicine New York, USA in A/Prof Matthew Greenblatt's lab.
Dr Macfarlane has received 18 awards for her research, including the Christine and TJ Martin Research Award from the Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society (2025), an American Society for Bone and Mineral Research Young Investigator award (2023), and the Orthopedic Research Society Alice L. Jee Award (2025). She is an active member in the research community and serves as Co-chair of the Early Career Investigator Committee (ECIC) for the Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society (ANZBMS) and is a guest editor for the journal Bone.
