Dr Ryo Nakano is an orthopaedic surgeon and Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Towada City Hospital in Aomori, Japan. He graduated in medicine from Hirosaki University School of Medicine in 2019 and is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon. His clinical research centres on the pharmacological treatment of osteoporosis, with a particular focus on the bone-forming agent romosozumab. Using real-world cohorts from northern Japan — ranging from single-centre series of around 315 patients to multicentre datasets of approximately 400 patients — he investigates treatment-response prediction (using bone turnover markers such as P1NP and TRACP-5b, prior treatment history, vitamin D status and baseline BMD) and the efficacy and safety of romosozumab in specific populations, including patients across CKD stages, the very elderly, and those at risk of hypocalcaemia. His work has been published in journals including Bone, Calcified Tissue International, Nutrients, Frontiers in Endocrinology and Bone Reports. Recent studies have examined baseline BMD as a determinant of lumbar spine response in hip non-responders (Bone), consistent BMD gains across BMI categories (Calcified Tissue International), context-dependent 25-hydroxyvitamin D and BMD response (Nutrients), and bone turnover marker change as a predictor of two-year BMD after sequential therapy (Frontiers in Endocrinology). He is a recipient of the JSBMR Travel Award for ANZBMS 2026.
